The lake is extremely important as it serves as the water supply for not only North and West Vancouver on the North Shore but also for the large metropolitan area of Vancouver on the other side of the Fraser River as well. A fascinating history, it attributes the name of the river as deriving from the name of the local Squamish chief who lived from appoximately 1792 and more than likely witnessed the arrivals of both Captain James Cook and Captain George Vancouver.
