This is suprising given its profound significance to the United States. More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed - double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the first, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald."

The Battle of the Somme The Heroism and Horror of War, Gilbert, Martin
15 Gilbert, Martin The Battle of the Somme The Heroism and Horror of War
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 2006 0771035470 / 9780771035470 1st Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
Only slight wear top edge of DJ ; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. ; B&W Photographs, Maps; 9.20 X 6 X 1.20 inches; 332 pages; A history of the Battle of the Somme, where 310,000 troops from German, French, British and Canadian armies died during just 138 days of battle. "Every July 1, while Canadians celebrate what they have, Newfoundlanders remember what they have lost: on 1 July 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 733 of 801 men in the 1st Newfoundland Regiment were killed. From their starting position in a British support trench, the Newfoundlanders had to cross some 230 metres of fire-swept ground before they reached their own front line. In less than a half-hour, it was all over. The Divisional Commander wrote of the Newfoundland effort: “It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valour, and its assault failed of success because dead men can advance no further.”Well might the Germans refer to the Battle of the Somme as das Blutbad – the bloodbath. From 1 July to 15 November 1916, a period of just 138 days, more than 310,000 soldiers from four great armies – the British, Canadian, French, and German – were killed. The German death toll on the Somme was larger than that of all the Allied forces combined. A total of 164,055 Germans died on the narrow battlefield while the total number of Allied dead was 146,404. The Somme cost Canada 24,029 casualties. The heroism of the Dominion troops moved British prime minister David Lloyd George to write: “The Canadians played a part of such distinction that thenceforward they were marked as storm troops. . . .Whenever the Germans found the Canadian Corps coming into the line, they prepared for the worst.” This book is an illustration of what Winston Churchill called the “vile and utter folly and barbarism” of war. It also shows war’s incredible patriotism and heroism."

20 Harris, Stephen L. Duty, Honor, Privilege New York's Silk Stocking Regiment and the Breaking of the Hindenburg Line
Dulles, VA Brassey's Inc 2001 1574884670 / 9781574884678 First Paperback Edition Softcover Very Good
Front card cover has crease on bottom foredge.; A bright, solid book.; B&W Photographs; 9.13 X 6.06 X 1.57 inches; 374 pages; "One of the most heroic, and socially fascinating, episodes of World War I; This National Guard unit included the scions of New York society (including Vanderbilts, Roosevelts, Van Burens, Harrimans, Van Rensselaers, and Rhinelanders), artists, actors, writers, editors, and reporters; Dozens of photographs from private collections; A well-told story of a time when wealth and privilege often fueled patriotism and courage On September 29, 1918, a regiment of volunteers from New York State, many of them rich boys from Manhattan, attacked the famed Hindenburg Line, one of the strongest defensive systems ever devised. In the tradition of the Union Army's heroic assaults on Confederate entrenchments during the closing battles of the Civil War, the doughboys hurled themselves at the center of a desperate but still powerful army. At a frightful cost, they broke the enemy and, just as their Union forebears had done, helped bring a terrible war to a close. The regiment suffered more killed that day than any other regiment in American history. Interweaving extracts from letters, diaries, and previously published accounts, Duty, Honor, Privilege follows the patrician 7th New York Infantry Regiment from the spring of 1917 when war was declared, through its merger with the plebian 1st Regiment from upstate New York to form the 107th, to training with the British in France, and to the heroic attack on the Hindenburg Line. Finally, we witness their welcome-home parade, still believed to be the biggest parade in New York City history."
