9 Davies, Ed & Steve Ellis & Foreword by Bill Boeing Jr. Seattle's Commercial Aviation 1908-1941

In 1916, he founded the airplane company that put Seattle on the aviation map. Before Boeing, Seattle featured aircraft builders like Eugene Romano, G. T. Takasou, Tom Hamilton, and Herb Munter. Boeing emerged during World War I and, by the beginning of World War II, had become a world leader. In those years, lesser known individuals like Eddie Hubbard, Percy Barnes, Vern Gorst, the Becvar brothers, Elliott Merrill, Jim Galvin, and Lana Kurtzer influenced commercial aviation around Seattle. Drawing on photographs from around the area, Seattle's Commercial Aviation: 1908-1941 illustrates the early days beginning with dirigible flights, recognizes the arrival of commercial airmail and the airlines, salutes the local operators, and marks Seattle's emergence as the aviation gateway to Alaska."

London Bloomsbury Publications 1994 0747518262 / 9780747518266 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket
DJ shows very light shelf wear. Gift inscription on front pastedown. ; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. ; B&W and Colour photographs; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 224 pages; During World War II in 1942, a fleet of warplanes consisting of two B-17 "Flying Fortress" bombers and six P-38 Lightning fighters were flying on a transfer run from North America to Scotland. During the leg of the flight from Greenland to Iceland, they ran into severe weather over the Denmark Strait and were forced to turn back. Unfortunately, all the landing fields within their fuel range were socked in under the same weather conditions. Running low on fuel, the two bombers and four of the Lightning fighters were forced to crash-land on the coast of Greenland. All personnel survived the landings and were eventually rescued, however the aircraft were abandoned to the elements. Over 50 years later, and expedition was mounted by Pat Epps and Richard Taylor to possibly recover one or more of the aircraft, by this time under more than 200 feet of snow and ice. This book is an account of the search, discovery and eventual recovery of one of the P-38's by one of the expedition members.

20 Launius, Roger D. & Louis L. Snyder (editor) NASA A History of the U.S. Civil Space Program
Malabar FL Krieger Publishing Company 1994 Third Printing Hardcover Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
Front flap creased, otherwise as new. ; A bright, solid book, DJ in Mylar . ; An Anvil Original; 7.10 X 4.50 X 0.80 inches; 276 pages; When future generations review the history of the twentieth century they will undoubtedly judge humanity's movement into space, with both machines and people, as one of its seminal developments. Even at this juncture, the complex nature of spaceflight and the activity that it has engendered on the part of many peoples and governments makes the U.S. civil space program a significant area of investigation. People from all avenues of experience and levels of education share an interest in the drama of spaceflight. This book is the most up-to-date synthesis of the American civil space program available, and the only one designed especially for use as a college textbook. Written by NASA's chief historian, it describes the history of this effort from its earliest origins to the early 1990s and offers a powerful analysis of the space program that merges political, economic, technological, scientific, and foreign affairs into a meaningful whole. As in all the Anvil Series texts, it has both a sound historical narrative and a set of key documents which suggest other aspects of the story.
