Portrait of the Assassin, Ford, Gerald R. & John R. Stiles
4 Ford, Gerald R. & John R. Stiles Portrait of the Assassin
New York Simon & Schuster 1965 First Edition; Second Printing Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket
Light shelfwear to DJ and board edges. Previous owner's name on front free endpaper. ; A tight, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 508 pages; The only book written by one of the actual commissioners who sat on the Warren Commission investigating the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (other later books were written by Commission staff lawyers), congressman Ford actually broke the law at the time the book was published as he had used confidential information of the Commission in the book. During his time on the Commission, he was also acting as an informant to the FBI on the Commission's daily activities and findings. Ford was a believer in a single assassin and the "single bullet theory" from the beginning, going so far as to 'correct' a text passage in the report prior to publication, changing the wording describing Kennedy's "back wound" to read "neck wound". He was the Commissioner who attended the most testimony hearings, only Earl Warren himself could claim more time at the hearings. Ford remained a staunch defender of the Commission findings for the rest of his life. A 'must read' for any serious student of the JFK assassination.

8 Holmes, W. Leslie & Bruce Northorp Where Shadows Linger The Untold Story of the RCMP's Olson Murders Investigation
Surrey, BC Heritage House Publishing 2000 1895811929 / 9781895811926 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
Only slight wear ; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. Stated First Edition ; B&W Photographs; 8.60 X 5.70 X 0.70 inches; 256 pages; "Darryll Kettles and Les Forsythe fingered Clifford Olson as a murderer the first time they interviewed him in their respective RCMP detachments. Within a couple of months, and after seven more children were killed, other Mounties involved in the case were also convinced of Olson's guilt. But they needed proof. Under interrogation after he was arrested and charged with one murder, Olson offered a deal: money for the bodies of the ten other young people he had abducted and murdered in British Columbia's Lower Mainland. To his shock, both the RCMP and two levels of government agreed to his terms. The unprecedented $100,000 deal generated headlines across North America, but also led to Olson's guilty plea and admission of multiple slayings. His later claims that he had killed people in Hawaii, Seattle, across Canada, and even in Ireland have continued to distort the true story for two decades."

At the core of the issue were the mysterious circumstances surrounding Smith's death, particularly the fact that the only other adult in the house at the time was the Chinese houseboy. When Smith's death was followed by the assassination of Davie Lew, a well-known Chinese man, it only strengthened the European view that Vancouver's Asian community was a hotbed of violence and corruption.Newspaper editors and most of Vancouver's white community raised an outcry, charging the police with incompetence and demanding arrests, while Presbyterian indignation called for law and order as well as an end to Chinese immigration. Before the summer was over, the tongs of Chinatown and the clans of Canada's West Coast were set to defend their own, and one Scottish minister went so far as to declare it a time of "holy war.""
