The author was a subaltern in the 4th Hussars but found regimental life too quiet to satisfy his adventurous spirit and when he heard that a Field Force of three Brigades was being formed under General Sir Bindon Blood to quell a revolt of the Pathan tribesmen, asked to join it." The only way he could do this was to acquire accreditation as a correspondent. He ended up writing for the London Daily Telegraph and two Indian newspapers. These writings were so well received that Churchill turned them into his first book.

British Gallantry Awards, 1855-2000, Duckers, Peter
3 Duckers, Peter British Gallantry Awards, 1855-2000
Buckinghamshire, UK Shire 2001 0747805164 / 9780747805168 First Edition Softcover Near Fine
Card covers show very light shelf wear.; A bright, solid book.; Shire Library; Colour Illustrations; 8.11 X 5.75 X 0.24 inches; 64 pages; "Since the ancient times soldiers have been honoured for gallantry in battle, and since the 1850s specific acts of bravery 'in the face of the enemy' by British and Imperial forces have been recognized by the award of a range of wearable decorations. These provide a visual indication both of the bravery of the recipient of its recognition by the government and nation. Collecting awards for gallantry and researching them and their recipients has become a significant hobby within the world of militaria and numismatics: it provides enthusiasts with a feeling of real contact with those who experienced the dangers and excitement of the great events of military history, and it helps to keep alive the memory of brave men and women who served their country around the world. This book surveys these British decorations and medals from their origins in the Crimean War of 1854-6 up to the twentieth century."
