He is not yet twenty as we follow him from his cloistered home in Toronto across the Atlantic to Ypres and the horrors of the battlefield. He finds himself in a nightmare world of trench warfare, of mud and smoke, of chlorine gas and rotting corpses. In this world gone mad, Robert Ross performs a last desperate act to declare his commitment to life in the midst of death. The Wars is about the war that would end all wars; it is, therefore, the story of all wars. And at its centre is the compassionate portrait of a young man whose smouldering inner conflict bursts into flame as he is swept into the most traumatic war in history. The Wars is an elemental novel with a magnificent feel for its period. It is a dazzling and powerful achievement. When The Wars was first published in 1977, it was greeted with rave reviews and widely praised for its power and intensity. The winner of a Governor General's Award, it immediately entered into the hearts and minds of Canadians of all ages and interests. The Wars is one of our true literary classics, and with this new edition Penguin pays homage to its greatness and to the late Timothy Findley."

Rendezvous at Dieppe, Langford, Ernest
16 Langford, Ernest Rendezvous at Dieppe
Madeira Park, BC Harbour 1992 1550170767 / 9781550170764 Paperback Very Good+
Light wear and scuffing of card covers ; A bright, solid book ; Trade PB; 0.6 x 8.4 x 5.5 Inches; 172 pages; As a young man living in England at the time of the Allied Landing at Dieppe, Canadian novelist and screenwriter Ernest Langford acquired a special affection for the Canadian soldiers who fought so valiantly and suffered so harshly in the ill-fated raid. On August 19,1942, Major-General J. M. Roberts led 5000 troops of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division in Operation jubilee, a raid on the small, Nazi-occupied town of Dieppe, France. Nine hours later, 900 Canadian men were dead and 1300 had been taken prisoner. This historical novel opens in the months immediately before the raid at Dieppe, when four young volunteers - who form an incongruous sampling of British Columbia's youth - meet in training camp and agree to stay together. By the time they cross the English Channel and drop into the water on the morning of August 19,1942, the reader is caught up in the story of these raw recruits and the fate each of them meet. 'Rendezvous at Dieppe' is a tribute to the hundreds of Canadian men who passed the ultimate test of honour and courage at Dieppe. The book is published on the 50th anniversary of the Dieppe raid.
