3 Backhouse, Constance Colour-Coded A Legal History of Racism in Canada, 1900-1950
Toronto University of Toronto Press, Scholarly Publishing Division 1999 0802047122 / 9780802047120 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
Only slight wear ; A bright, solid book dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History; B&W Photographs; 8.90 X 6.10 X 1.40 inches; 488 pages; "Historically Canadians have considered themselves to be more or less free of racial prejudice. Although this conception has been challenged in recent years, it has not been completely dispelled. In Colour-Coded, Constance Backhouse illustrates the tenacious hold that white supremacy had on our legal system in the first half of this century, and underscores the damaging legacy of inequality that continues today.Backhouse presents detailed narratives of six court cases, each giving evidence of blatant racism created and enforced through law. The cases focus on Aboriginal, Inuit, Chinese-Canadian, and African-Canadian individuals, taking us from the criminal prosecution of traditional Aboriginal dance to the trial of members of the 'Ku Klux Klan of Kanada.' From thousands of possibilities, Backhouse has selected studies that constitute central moments in the legal history of race in Canada. Her selection also considers a wide range of legal forums, including administrative rulings by municipal councils, criminal trials before police magistrates, and criminal and civil cases heard by the highest courts in the provinces and by the Supreme Court of Canada. The extensive and detailed documentation presented here leaves no doubt that the Canadian legal system played a dominant role in creating and preserving racial discrimination. A central message of this book is that racism is deeply embedded in Canadian history despite Canada's reputation as a raceless society."

He later upgraded to Grade 12 equivalency. His first job was with Mannix as a labourer in their shop in Ogden and later went with him to Spray Lakes and finally, to Kitamat. Bruce moved to Camrose, Alberta where he met and married Nina Shoults, who was a dance instructor. Their union produced six children - two girls and four boys. Besides having a dancing mother, Bruce could carry a tune himself likely passed down by his own father, an accomplished musician who played various instruments. Bruce joined the City Police on April 1st (April Fools Day), 1955, along with partners Bill Brink and Don MacNeil. He walked the beat for five years before starting dispatching duties in the old Headquarters on the south side of 7th Avenue. He has many fond memories of the Patrol Division where, between beats and cars he earned a combination of 10 merit marks and commendations. His final move was back into uniform at the back counter before taking his retirement on July 1st, 1983.

10 Grant, Shelagh D. Arctic Justice On Trial for Murder, Pond Inlet, 1923
Montreal Mcgill Queens University Press 2002 0773523375 / 9780773523371 1st Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. A bright, solid book.; McGill-Queen's Native and Northern; 9.74 X 6.30 X 1.25 inches; 342 pages; "Arctic Justice is the story of the execution of a white fur trader by an Inuk. Shelagh Grant recounts how this event was crucial in establishing law enforcement in the High Arctic and documents its tragic consequences for Inuit in the subsequent decades. This compelling and generously illustrated account combines archival history with Inuit oral history to shed light on the conflicting values and perceptions of two disparate cultures. Despite the fact that Nuqallaq was following Inuit customary law in carrying out a collectively sanctioned act to defend the community from the dangerously crazed trader Robert Janes, Canadian authorities made the unprecedented decision to put him and two accomplices on trial for murder. Grant shows how this decision was motivated by Canada's international political concerns for establishing sovereignty over the Arctic and how the outcome of the trial - Nuqallaq's sentence to ten years of hard labour in Stony Mountain Penitentiary and subsequent death from tuberculosis - was determined more by fear than evidence. In what amounts to a social history of North Baffin Island in the twentieth century, Grant offers telling portraits of the people involved, including the victim, Robert Janes of Newfoundland; Captain J.E. Bernier of the CGS Arctic, explorer and friend to the Inuit; English trader and entrepreneur Henry Toke Munn; the investigating RCMP officer Staff-Sargeant A. H.; Judge L. A. Rivet, and others. Most importantly we meet the remarkable Nuqallaq, his wife Ataguttiaq, and the Inuit of North Baffin Island. Arctic Justice will appeal to anyone interested in the Arctic and its indigenous peoples, contact history, anthropology, legal history, and RCMP history."

It is a plain, full record of a crime that belongs to history. When a reporter from a newspaper here in Maryland asked to talk to me, he said he had heard that I was writing another book...what about?...I gave him the title and the names of Sacco and Vanzetti. There was a wavering pause...then:"Well, I don't really know anything about them... for me it's just history." It is my conviction that when events are forgotten, buried in the cellar of the page - they are no longer even history."

Policing the Fringe The Curious Life of a Small-Town Mountie, Scheideman, Charles
17 Scheideman, Charles Policing the Fringe The Curious Life of a Small-Town Mountie
Madeira Park, BC Harbour Publishing 2009 1550174827 / 9781550174823 First Edition; First Printing Paperback Near Fine
Only slight wear.; A bright, solid book ; Trade PB; 0.94 x 8.35 x 5.43 Inches; 320 pages; "From the 1960s through the 1980s, RCMP Sergeant Charlie Scheideman spent much of his time patrolling the "dark corners of the Interior of British Columbia" where "the citizens would meet the modern criteria for redneck: if their veranda collapsed it would kill more than four dogs; they think 'harrass' is two words, and so on." Such places weren't much fun to police but they were full of characters, many of whom make their way into Charlie's entertaining book, 'Policing the Fringe'. We meet Walter and Wilbur, two Hixon hillbillies who went on a bender and decided it would be fun to stagger out onto the Cariboo Highway with a rifle and hold up passing cars, which worked well enough until they held up a motorhome from Alaska that turned out to be better armed than they were. We meet Petre, the hard-working hermit who was cheated out of his savings by three slick-talking mining promoters and waited to take his revenge--with an axe.

With wry humour and a policeman's eye for relevant detail, Scheideman recounts events that range from the ridiculous to the horrific to the tragic. Once he stopped a car in the Fraser Canyon driven by three normally responsible American fishermen, who on this occasion were careening wildly from one guard rail to another. Their defence? They had failed to allow for the added kick of Canadian beer. His most searing memory was of waiting for the embers of a burned house to cool enough so he could retrieve the bodies of two small victims while in a nearby house, party-goers kept right on partying. One of the most revealing accounts ever written about policing in small-town Canada, this book bristles with unforgettable stories about the author's 27 years working on the RCMP's front lines. It will give readers new respect for the men and women who patrol Canada's backroads--both because of the extremely taxing work they do and the good spirit with which they do it."

RCMP The March West, Stenson, Fred
19 Stenson, Fred RCMP The March West
Nepean ON GAPC Entertainment 1999 0968507107 / 9780968507100 Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket
DJ shows edge wear with chipping and small tears. Gift inscription on title page. ; A bright, solid book. This oblong book with dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector is liberally illustrated with B&W and colour photos. ; B&W and Colour Photographs; 11.80 X 9 X 0.70 inches; 176 pages; The March West is a celebration in picture and story of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on the occasion of the force's 125th year. Original images combine with the rich colour of modern paintings and photographs to breath new life into the story of the March West of 1874: the heroic and arduous trek that saw 275 recruits travel 800 miles of arid prairie in search of whisky traders who were fast destroying the traditions and livelihood of the Blackfoot Confederacy. The March was badly planned and orchestrated but the original force withstood bad water, hunger and exhaustion to achieve its objective. Three divisions under Colonel James F. Macleod stayed in the west and put an end to the killing traffic in whisky. The March West follows Canada's mounted police through and beyond these founding moments. The text by author Fred Stenson traces the development of the force to the modern day. Smoothing the transition from buffalo prairie to agricultural settlement, policing construction of the railway through the Rocky Mountains, the Yukon gold rush, the courageous northern patrols that extended Canadian sovereignty into the High Arctic--the stories are here in word and picture: a colorful retracing of the paths by which the Canadian mountie became an international legend. The colour photographs that beautify the pages of The March West were taken by the world renown Canadian photographer, John McQuarrie: many on the set of"The Great March," a two-hour television special produced by the GAPC Broadcast Entertainment Inc. of Ottawa, Canada, as part of the RCMP's 125th anniversary celebration. A final section of the book is devoted to "The Great March," featuring production stills by John McQuarrie taken on the motion picture set south of Lethbridge, Alberta.

Order and Discipline in China The Shanghai Mixed Court 1911-1927, Stephens, Thomas B.
20 Stephens, Thomas B. Order and Discipline in China The Shanghai Mixed Court 1911-1927
Seattle, WA University of Washington Press 1992 0295971231 / 9780295971230 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ with no dust jacket
Red cloth boards show light shelf wear.; A tight solid book, text unmarked. ; Asian Law Series No. 9; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 159 pages; "China’s traditional system of dispute resolution and maintenance of order in society has been treated by Western scholars as legal history, but because the Chinese system is radically different from European systems in its conceptual structure and therefore does not fit into the familiar categories and models of Western law and jurisprudence, such treatment has been inadequate and often misleading. In Order and Discipline in China, Thomas B. Stephens provides a new approach, methodology, and theoretical framework for the interpretation of traditional Chinese “law.”Stephens argues convincingly that Chinese society has always operated according to the disciplinary system of order, ni which hierarchy is established by actual power, and he provides a thorough methodology and framework for understanding disciplinary theory. He discusses the system, showing it not the random (or even unjust) tyranny it may sometimes appear to the Western, legally oriented mind but an effective system that successfully guided China for centuries. The study is not merely historical, but provides insights into Chinese ways of thinking about social relationships, dispute resolution, and the enforcement of civil obligations that are vital to intercultural understanding today. His study is based on the activities of the Mixed Court of the International Settlement at Shanghai, which dealt with legal problems concerning Chinese people within the representative, or “assessor.” The Mixed Court conventionally has been looked upon as a disciplinary tribunal enforcing a system of dispute resolution and the maintenance of social order upon the principles of disciplinary theory. The Mixed Court is a convenient point from which to measure the legal and disciplinary systems against each other and to study them in conflict. Although Western powers tried to interpret the court in legal terms, it responds much more convincingly to analysis according to the disciplinary system: it provided its right to rule by the abililty to enforce its decisions, and it decided cases not, as claimed, by Chinese laws (which actually did not exist) but according to those principles established by the Western consuls."
