Picturing Knowledge Historical and Philosophical Problems Concerning the Use of Art in Science, Baigrie, Brian S.
2 Baigrie, Brian S. Picturing Knowledge Historical and Philosophical Problems Concerning the Use of Art in Science
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1996 0802074391 / 9780802074393 Softcover Near Fine
Only slight wear ; A bright, solid book, text unmarked; Trade PB; Toronto Studies in Philosophy; B&W Illustrations; 9 X 6 X 1 inches; 389 pages; The traditional concept of scientific knowledge places a premium on thinking, not visualizing. Scientific illustrations are still generally regarded as devices that serve as heuristic aids when reasoning breaks down. When scientific illustration is not used in this disparaging sense as a linguistic aid, it is most often employed as a metaphor with no special visual content. What distinguishes pictorial devices as resources for doing science, and the special problems that are raised by the mere presence of visual elements in scientific treatises, tends to be overlooked. The contributors to this volume examine the historical and philosophical issues concerning the role that scientific illustration plays in the creation of scientific knowledge. They regard both text and picture as resources that scientists employ in their practical activities, their value as scientific resources deriving from their ability to convey information.

Das Buch 15 Volumes, Buber, Martin; Franz Rosenzweig (translator)
3 Buber, Martin; Franz Rosenzweig (translator) Das Buch 15 Volumes

Slight wear and soil to cream colored flexible vellum boards, light foxing to fore and bottom page edges ; Bright, solid books, top edge gilt, gilt stamped titles front and spine. This is not the true first but the deluxe edition published with vellum flexible boards, satin bookmark bound in each book. Text in German.; Die Schrift; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 2967 pages; Das Buch (Die Schrift) is the first translation of the Hebrew Bible into German, a language that would be more understandable to European Jews. "Born in Vienna, Buber came from a family of observant Jews, but broke with Jewish custom to pursue secular studies in philosophy. In 1902, he became the editor of the weekly Die Welt, the central organ of the Zionist movement, although he later withdrew from organizational work in Zionism. In 1923, Buber wrote his famous essay on existence, Ich und Du (later translated into English as I and Thou), and in 1925, he began translating the Hebrew Bible into the German language. In 1930, Buber became an honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main, but resigned in protest from his professorship immediately after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. He then founded the Central Office for Jewish Adult Education, which became an increasingly important body as the German government forbade Jews to attend public education. In 1938, Buber left Germany and settled in Jerusalem, Mandate Palestine (later Israel)." Buber worked with Rosenzweig until ill health forced his co-translator to resign in 1929. The balance of work was done by Buber alone. With the rise of Nazism and the changes to the laws regulating the publishing industry, Verlag Lambert Schneider was forced to cede the publishing of this series to Schocken. The books are titled as follows: - I Im Anfang; II Namen; III Er Rief; IV In Der Wüste; V Reden; VI Josephus; VII Richter; VIII Schmuel; IX Königs; X Jeschajahu; XI Jirmajahu; XII Jecheskel; XIII; Der Zwölf; XIV Der Preisungen and XV Gleichsprüche

Volume one, published in 1960, is an analysis of the rise of Fidel Castro and his followers, the reactions of the Organization of American States, the legal repercussions with regard to the Monroe Doctrine and the relations with the Latin American countries as well as the US embargo on exports to Cuba, which exists to this day. Volume 2 contains a brief analysis of the events and repercussions in Volume one and expands to include the events through to mid-1963. In that period the US, under John F. Kennedy, attempted to depose Castro as evidenced by the disastrous 'Bay of Pigs' attack. Later, the whole world held its breath, fearing a nuclear war between the US and the USSR when the US navy was instructed to blockade Cuba after evidence of a buildup of Russian nuclear weapons became evident to the US intelligence services. The 'October Crisis' which pitted JFK against Krushchev in a battle of wits is analysed as well as the actions of the UN and other countries which sided with Cuba. Also present are communications between the interested parties - JFK, Krushchev and U Thant, Secretary General of the United Nations . These books are scarce, available in libraries but none appear for sale in the major databases.

Poems for All the Annettes, Purdy, Alfred
8 Purdy, Alfred Poems for All the Annettes
Toronto Contact Press 1962 1st Softcover Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket Signed by Author
Signed by Author; White dustjacket lightly soiled with some chipping to head of spine, some damage to front panel of DJ, pale blue card covers of book shows light wear, some foxing of page edges. ; Inscribed by author on front fly. This book was acquired from the daughter of the woman to whom it was warmly inscribed. She told me how the poet was a family friend (her father also served in the RCAF during WWII). A tight solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. ; Trade PB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 64 pages; This was Purdy's 6th book and considered to be one of his finest. "Alfred Purdy came into attention in Canadian poetry in the post-war period, though like Souster, Irving Layton and others, he had been in the armed forces (RCAF) during the war and had begun writing earlier. In the Air Force he published privately a small book (he now wishes to forget), 'The Enchanted Echo' (1944). During his Wanderjahre he recalls "riding the freight trains across the the country to Vancouver and back"; operating a "taxi business" in Belleville, Ontario and helping to organize a union in a turbulent mattress factory in Vancouver." (jacket blurb) .. "was one of Canada's most celebrated poets. As famous for his turbulent, working man's way of life as for his poetry, he was the walking definition of a poet whose work encapsulated his life. His thunderous, resonant voice and personal charisma were unforgettable, among such contemporaries as Earle Birney, Milton Acorn and Irving Layton, he stood out easily. Proud of his working class roots in small-town Ontario, plainspoken and defiant to the end, Al Purdy helped define modern Canadian poetry. His poems were wide-reaching, touching on everything from his endless travels to the beauty of nature, from hockey players to his vision of social democracy. He wrote more than 30 books of poetry and prose and inspired and encouraged many young poets, among them Margaret Atwood, George Galt and Susan Musgrave. To many, Al Purdy was Canadian poetry personified, an accessible, unabashedly patriotic voice that was often obstreperous and cranky but never stopped taking on the world. It was a voice that had to be heard to be fully appreciated. Standing well over six feet tall, with a curiously loping walk, Al Purdy could inspire awe among his audiences, and his readings were as much theatre as poetry. His stentorian tones could clear a restaurant and his opinions were always passionate." (Harbour Publishing bio written on the occasion of Purdy's death)
