The Crippled Tree; China: Biography, History, Autobiography, Suyin, Han
147 Suyin, Han The Crippled Tree; China: Biography, History, Autobiography
London Jonathan Cape 1966 First Edition; Third Printing Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket
Dust jacket worn with some chipping, all corners clipped ; A bright, solid book, dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. ; B&W Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 461 pages; "In The Crippled Tree Han Suyin evokes, through the life of her two families (eastern and western), a panorama of the history of China from 1885 to 1928. It contains eye-witness accounts, from family papers, of the Sino-French War, of the revolution of 1911 and of the emergence of Chiang Kai-shek. This book is more compelling than history and more profound than biography: it describes how events mould the lives of individuals, and how their private emotions are twisted by the gigantic conflicts of a changing world. The theme of the book is the story of the Chinese family of Han Suyin, a family deeply feudal, rooted in a far inland province of China adjacent to Tibet; yet, because of the western invasion of China, brought face to face with compelling change. Han Suyin's father, marked for a life of classical scholasticism, became instead an engineer, sent by his government to study railway construction in Belgium. There he fell in love with the daughter of a respectable Belgian family, and both defied all the conventions of their societies to marry. Returning to a China in revolution in 1913, they endured and suffered, helpless in the face of tragedy beyond their grasp. Eight children were born to them, while Han Suyin's father worked on the railways of China, and her mother endured the hardships and isolation of an outcast, ostracized by her own people. Nearly fifty years later one of their children, Han Suyin, was to spend years of painstaking research, both in China and in Europe, reconstructing the life and times of her parents and grandparents. This is one of the most important books about China yet written; while other volumes will continue the story, The Crippled Tree is complete in itself, with its own satisfying ending. It is a unique contribution to our knowledge and understanding of the One World in which we all live, east or west."

The Journey of Martin Nadaud; A Life and Turbulent Times, Tindall, Gillian
152 Tindall, Gillian The Journey of Martin Nadaud; A Life and Turbulent Times
London Chatto & Windus 1999 0701168676 / 9780701168674 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Near Fine dust jacket
Tanning of pages as is common in British publications of this era ; Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. A bright, solid book.; B&W Photographs; 8.50 X 5.51 X 1.18 inches; 310 pages; "An exceptional work of miniaturist history that recreates through the life of a little-known figure the turbulent worlds of Paris and London in the mid-nineteenth century." "Martin Nadaud (1815-1898) was a prominent and self-made figure of 19th-century French politics. Nadaud's life began and ended in the Creuse, a region in central France notable for its export of stone masons on annual migrations to construct the great public buildings of Paris. Nadaud entered history at age 14 on the first of his many treks to Paris. There, in addition to learning the mason's craft, he began to educate himself about the political interests of the working classes. In this way Nadaud began the journey of the book's title, which brought him to Parliament as its first working-class member; to a long exile in England when his liberal republicanism was displaced by the Second Empire of Louis Napoleon; and again to senior positions in the French government when Louis Napoleon fell in 1870. Tindall's account is especially strong in her evocation of the physical settings of Nadaud's life: the atmospherics of a Creusois village, the emergence of Paris as a modern city, and England during the Industrial Revolution. Nadaud, however, remains elusive as a personality. In part, this is because his memoirs and surviving letters tend to veil his experience as a private man. Historian Tindall (Celestine; Countries of the Mind) extracts all she can from the materials at her disposal, but the inner character of her subject stubbornly resists disclosure. We are left with a public figure compounded out of strenuous manual labor, impressive efforts at self-education and a dedication to the well-being of workers like himself."

155 Tschiffely, A. F Tschiffely's ride Being the account of 10,000 miles in the saddle through the Americas from Argentine to Washington
London Heinemann 1934 Reprint Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket

Black and red imprint of the route on front board, black titles on spine ; B&W Illustrations; 442 pages; "Aimé Tschiffely had been teaching in an English–American school in Argentina for almost a decade when he conceived his astounding plan: to travel from Buenos Aires to New York—10,000 miles—on horseback. In April 1925, Tschiffely set out with two native Argentine horses, Mancha and Gato, and with rugged determination, the trio traversed the Pampas, scaled the Bolivian Andes, struggled through Peruvian sands, swam the crocodile–infested rivers of Columbia, and fought their way through the jungles of Panama. They crossed Central America through countries devastated by years of war to finally reach Washington D.C., followed by a reception in New York. The three had been together, exclusively, for more than two years; during that time, Tschiffely developed a remarkable relationship with his horses—an affinity that has seldom been equaled. This colorful account is a true classic of travel literature and perhaps one of the greatest animal stories ever written."
