The Jackie Handbook, West, Naomi & Catherine Wilson
163 West, Naomi & Catherine Wilson The Jackie Handbook
London M Q Publications 2005 1840729368 / 9781840729368 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Only slight wear to book and dust jacket ; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; Colour and B&W Photographs; 6.85 X 5.28 X 1.57 inches; 429 pages; Jackie O Handbook is a groundbreaking new interpretation of the life of Jackie Kennedy Onassis and the extraordinary influence of the image she so carefully crafted. It is illustrated with some 300 photographs and other images which bring to life Jackie's iconic status. Ten years since her death, fascination with Jackie O remains as strong as ever, especially among women and in the fashion world. The authors explore the woman behind - and in many ways the creator of - the many myths by which we remember a woman of extraordinary poise and single-mindedness. In the Jackie O Handbook, the authors venture behind Jackie's trademark dark glasses and regal bearing to reveal the insecurities, the playfulness, the wit, the loyalty to friends and the ruthlessness with enemies of a woman who seemed more a figure from 18th century Versailles than from 20th century America. The book chronicles Jackie's life from childhood through her student years, her marriages to America's most charismatic politician and to the richest man in the world, her dedication to her children, and her last quiet years in New York. The authors have searched archives from London to Boston, and from Washington to Paris. The book contains five original interviews with contemporaries from the worlds of fashion, design and the arts who Jackie befriended.

Byng of Vimy General and Governor General, Williams, Jeffery
165 Williams, Jeffery Byng of Vimy General and Governor General
London Martin Secker & Warburg Ltd 1983 0436571102 / 9780436571107 1st Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
Only light wear to book & DJ ; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; 9 X 6.30 X 1.50 inches; 392 pages; "Field Marshal the Viscount Byng of Vimy did not fit into the conventional mould in the Army, as Governor-General of Canada or as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. Few officers commanded more widespread affection from their troops, or knew them and treated them with such respect as he did. Beginning with dramatic reforms in dress and living conditions in his own regiment, the 10th Royal Hussars, Byng consistently watched over the welfare of his men. Following the desperate Ypres battles of 1914-15, he was sent to Gallipoli to revive a failing enterprise, but instead, in the face of Kitchener's and Churchill's opposition, he called for it to be abandoned. He then planned one of the most successful withdrawals in the history of war. Ever seeking ways to win, Byng led the Canadian Corps to the capture of Vimy Ridge, and the Third Army in the first major tank battle at Cambrai, and in 1918 he commanded the largest of Britain's field armies in the final victory campaign. As Governor-General of Canada, he became almost a Canadian nationalist and worked for the unity of the widespread provinces. He advocated the adoption of a Canadian flag and abandonment of the word "Empire". His conception of the role of the Crown in the constitutional crisis of 1926 has led to its position in the Commonwealth today. Finally, at the age of 66 and fighting a wasting illness, he was summoned to reform the Metropolitan Police, which in a remarkably short time he brought into the 20th century."

In 1873 Dumont was elected to the presidency of the short-lived republic of St. Laurent; afterward he continued to play a leading role among the Métis of the South Saskatchewan River. He played a critical role in bringing Louis Riel back to Canada, in order to pressure the Canadian authorities to pay attention to the troubles of the Métis people. He was adjutant general in the provisional Métis government declared in the District of Saskatchewan in 1885, and commanded the Métis forces in the North-West Rebellion or North West Resistance of 1885." "In 1886, Dumont joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West where he received top billing as a rebel leader and crack marksman. Although the Canadian government granted a general amnesty in the summer of 1886, Dumont did not return to Canada until 1888, in order to lecture in Montreal. He retired to Batoche in 1893 eventually obtaining title to the lands he had settled in 1872. He returned to his former life as a farmer, hunter and trapper, and dictated two memoirs of his experiences in the rebellion. He died from natural causes in 1906." Wikipedia

169 Xianliang, Zhang; trans. by Martha Avery Half of Man is Woman; a novel
Toronto, ON Lester & Orpen Dennys 1988 0886191866 / 9780886191863 First Canadian Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket
Small spot bottom page edges, light edge wear to dustjacket ; DJ in Mylar, bright, solid book ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 285 pages; "Poet Zhang Yonglin is sentenced to a labor camp he ironically describes as a haven amidst the hysteria of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. After he marries a woman he had seen eight years earlier, the story becomes, on one level, an analogy between his temporary sexual impotence and the postion of intellectuals. A year later he is ready to abandon his wife and escape from the camp. Cameo appearances by philosophic and literary figures Marx and Meng-tz, Othello and Song Jian discussing China and sex which allows the incorporation of non-novelistic elements while indulging in gallows humor. The references to Western culture and the translator's historical notes should make this complex and fascinating book easily accessible." This books states that it is a novel but it is a fictionalized account of the author's experiences.
