24 Swoger, Gordon The Strange Odyssey of Poland's National Treasures, 1939-1961
Toronto Dundurn Press 2004 1550025155 / 9781550025156 First Edition Paperback Very Good Illustrated by B&W and Color Illustrations
Light edge wear and corner curl of card covers ; A bright, solid book ; Trade PB; 8.90 X 5.98 X 1.26 inches; 236 pages; "The Strange Odyssey of Poland's National Treasures, 1939-1961 tells the story of the Polish national treasures --their evacuation from their homeland under perilous conditions after the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 and their subsequent removal to western Europe and then to Canada. At the end of the war two Polish governments, a Communist one in Warsaw and a non-Communist one in London, vied for control of the national treasures. Before long the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, the RCMP, and the Canadian and Quebec governments all became involved in the desperate hide-and-seek confrontation between the two Polish governments. Eventually, in February 1961, the release of the historic treasures was negotiated and they were returned to their native land, twenty-two years after their wartime departure. It was indeed a long voyage home!"

Challenging Traditions Contemporary First Nations Art of the Northwest Coast, Thom, Ian M.
25 Thom, Ian M. Challenging Traditions Contemporary First Nations Art of the Northwest Coast
Vancouver BC Douglas & Mcintyre Ltd 2009 1553654145 / 9781553654148 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Only slight wear.; No dust jacket, publisher has enclosed this book in a heavy clear plastic that slips over the boards; 0.94 x 11.1 x 10.31 Inche; 186 pages; In the past few decades, contemporary Native American artists of the Northwest Coast have made a name for themselves as among the most dynamic and important artists working in North America. 'Challenging Traditions' celebrates this success by presenting the work of forty top living artists whose works highlight the exciting combination of contemporary vitality and traditional roots. For more than a century, Native Americans were actively discouraged from pursuing their traditional cultures by both the church and state, but they persisted in keeping alive their arts and ceremonies. With the rise of cultural and political activism, Native art is now flourishing on an unprecedented scale. Many artists are examining the meaning and purpose of Native American art in the twenty-first century, while following traditions and boldly experimenting with innovative subjects, techniques, and materials. Ian Thom explores these contradictions by describing the career, working methods, and philosophy of each artist, all of whom he interviewed especially for this book. He also discusses at least two significant recent works by each artist. Both senior and younger artists from the Northwest Coast are featured, working in a variety of media and styles: groundbreaking abstract painting and metal sculpture, painstaking woven spruce root hats and ceremonial woolen robes, works in glass, masks, carved panels, painted drums, striking political paintings, "Haida manga," jewelry, carved argillite works, and bentwood boxes. This book is a beautiful, provocative introduction to contemporary Native American art of the Northwest Coast, in the words and works of some of its leading lights. Among the artists and their work are: - Robert Davidson (Haida), - Alano Edzerz (Tahltan), - Preston Singletary (Tlingit), - Dempsey Bob (Tahltan-Tlingit), - Beau Dick (Kwakwaka'wakw), - Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun (Coast Salish), - Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas (Haida), - Shawn Hunt (Heiltsuk), - Jay Simeon (Haida)

Historic Architecture of Saskatchewan, Zelmer, Wayne & Saskatchewan Association of Architects
30 Zelmer, Wayne & Saskatchewan Association of Architects Historic Architecture of Saskatchewan
Regina, SK Focus Publishing 1986 0919781136 / 9780919781139 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Only light wear to book & DJ ; A bright, solid book. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. ; B&W and colour photographs; 184 pages; "Structures that best responded to the needs of those who settled here and represented their spirit and grand visions for life in a new land form Saskatchewan's historic architecture. Dating from the construction of Holy Trinity Church at Stanley Mission in 1854, historic architecture in Saskatchewan is relatively young by world standards. It has been created by architects, unschooled builders, and master craftsmen from many countries. They have established a hybrid of imported styles and utilitarian construction, intended originally to respond only to climate and satisfy immediate needs with the tools and materials at hand. These buildings are tributes to a time of optimism for the future and grand vision for a newly settled land. There is a story here worth telling while we can still see what remains of the buildings and remember the society that they served."
