The Artist and the Warrior Military History through the Eyes of the Masters, Rabb, Theodore K.
64 Rabb, Theodore K. The Artist and the Warrior Military History through the Eyes of the Masters
New Haven Yale University Press 2011 0300126379 / 9780300126372 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Only slight wear to book and dustjacket ; A bright, solid book. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. ; Colour Illustrations; 9.37 X 7.48 X 1.02 inches; 228 pages; "How have artists across the millennia responded to warfare? In this uniquely wide-ranging book, Theodore Rabb blends military history and the history of art to search for the answers. He draws our attention to masterpieces from the ancient world to the twentieth century—paintings, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, engravings, architecture, and photographs—and documents the evolving nature of warfare as artists have perceived it. The selected works represent landmarks in the history of art and are drawn mainly from the western tradition, though important examples from Japan, India, and the Middle East are also brought into the discussion. Together these works tell a story of long centuries during which warfare inspired admiration and celebration. Yet a shift toward criticism and condemnation emerged in the Renaissance, and by the end of the nineteenth century, glorification of the warrior by leading artists had ceased. Rabb traces this progression, from such works as the Column of Trajan and the Titian "Battle of Lepanto", whose makers celebrated glorious victories, to the antiwar depictions created by Brueghel, Goya, Picasso, and others. Richly illustrated and accessibly written, this book presents a study of unprecedented sweep and multidisciplinary interest."

Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector, text unmarked. ; B&W Illustrations; 8.60 X 6.40 X 1.50 inches; 420 pages; "The perception of symmetry in art and in nature has been appreciated since antiquity, with development of the underlying laws tracing back at least to Pythagorean times. By the end of the eighteenth century it was realized that the immense variety of natural crystal shapes could be accounted for on the basis of a rather small number of symmetry operations, of which some were equally applicable to biological systems. The mathematical theory of symmetry continued to mature throughout the last century, culminating in the independent discoveries in Russia, Germany, and England that a total of only 230 independent ways exist in which the operations of rotation, reflection, and translation can be combined to transform three-dimensional geometrical objects into themselves. Derivation of the 230 space groups depends ultimately on restricting the meaning of symmetry to that of a property of purely geometrical figures. A. V. Shubnikov and his collaborators, over the past three decades, expanded this concept of symmetry to include the sign of transformation operations."

Challenging Traditions Contemporary First Nations Art of the Northwest Coast, Thom, Ian M.
74 Thom, Ian M. Challenging Traditions Contemporary First Nations Art of the Northwest Coast
Vancouver BC Douglas & Mcintyre Ltd 2009 1553654145 / 9781553654148 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Only slight wear.; No dust jacket, publisher has enclosed this book in a heavy clear plastic that slips over the boards; 0.94 x 11.1 x 10.31 Inche; 186 pages; In the past few decades, contemporary Native American artists of the Northwest Coast have made a name for themselves as among the most dynamic and important artists working in North America. 'Challenging Traditions' celebrates this success by presenting the work of forty top living artists whose works highlight the exciting combination of contemporary vitality and traditional roots. For more than a century, Native Americans were actively discouraged from pursuing their traditional cultures by both the church and state, but they persisted in keeping alive their arts and ceremonies. With the rise of cultural and political activism, Native art is now flourishing on an unprecedented scale. Many artists are examining the meaning and purpose of Native American art in the twenty-first century, while following traditions and boldly experimenting with innovative subjects, techniques, and materials. Ian Thom explores these contradictions by describing the career, working methods, and philosophy of each artist, all of whom he interviewed especially for this book. He also discusses at least two significant recent works by each artist. Both senior and younger artists from the Northwest Coast are featured, working in a variety of media and styles: groundbreaking abstract painting and metal sculpture, painstaking woven spruce root hats and ceremonial woolen robes, works in glass, masks, carved panels, painted drums, striking political paintings, "Haida manga," jewelry, carved argillite works, and bentwood boxes. This book is a beautiful, provocative introduction to contemporary Native American art of the Northwest Coast, in the words and works of some of its leading lights. Among the artists and their work are: - Robert Davidson (Haida), - Alano Edzerz (Tahltan), - Preston Singletary (Tlingit), - Dempsey Bob (Tahltan-Tlingit), - Beau Dick (Kwakwaka'wakw), - Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun (Coast Salish), - Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas (Haida), - Shawn Hunt (Heiltsuk), - Jay Simeon (Haida)

For over fifty years she dedicated herself to that purpose through the medium of her paintings, writings and lectures. During the course of her career, Mildred not only painted the portraits of many prominent and historical Native Canadians, but she assembled an accompanying catalogue of anecdotes, folklore and legends, which today provide a unique chronicle of a vanished age. This publication is a collection of both Thornton's colourful portraits and the fascinating story behind each one." This particular book is an updated edition of the 1966 book 'Indian Lives and Legends" originally published by Mitchell Press in hardcover with tipped in plates. This was edited by the artist's son John Thornton.
