Signed by Author; Small ding on back panel of dust jacket, only light edge wear ; Inscribed by author on front free end paper. A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. ; 9.06 X 6.06 X 1.26 inches; 292 pages; The autobiography of the amazing Olympic rower, who came back from a leg-shattering accident 10 weeks prior to the 1992 Summer Olympics to finish in the Bronze Medal position. Laumann talks about both her professional and personal life, her children and the break-up of her first marriage. "Just ten weeks before the 1992 Olympic Games, Silken Laumann, the reigning world champion in single sculls rowing, suffered a brutal accident that left her right leg shattered and useless. Doctors doubted that she would ever row competitively again. But twenty-seven days, five operations and countless hours of gruelling rehabilitation later, Silken was back in her racing shell, ready to pursue her dream. When the starter’s pistol rang out on August 2, she made the greatest comeback in Canadian sports history, rowing to a bronze-medal finish while the world watched, captivated by her remarkable story. Silken became one of Canada’s most beloved Olympians and has continued to inspire, encouraging people to dream, live in the moment and embrace life’s unexpected, difficult and amazing journey. But there was a massive barrier in her path that she has never before spoken about, a hidden story much darker than the tale of her accident. Now, Silken bravely shines a spotlight on all the obstacles she has encountered—and overcome—in Unsinkable, a memoir that reveals not only new insights into her athletic success and triumph over physical adversity, but also the intense personal challenges of her past and the fierce determination she applies to living a bold, loving and successful life today.Time after time, this courageous champion has proven to be unsinkable. Silken’s extraordinary story offers us an intimate look at the complicated woman behind the Olympic hero, showing how perseverance and optimism can allow anyone to embrace the incredible opportunities that often go hand in hand with adversity."

River Queen The Amazing Story of Tugboat Titan Lucille Johnstone, Levy, Paul
83 Levy, Paul River Queen The Amazing Story of Tugboat Titan Lucille Johnstone
Madeira Park, BC Harbour Publishing 2006 1550173693 / 9781550173697 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Only slight wear to book and dust jacket ; Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. A bright, solid book.; B&W Photographs; 8.90 X 6.20 X 1 inches; 272 pages; "Rivtow was just a three-boat log-towing operation when Lucille Johnstone came aboard as an unskilled girl Friday in the late 1940s. By the 1980s, Rivtow had taken over its biggest rival to become one of the giants of the marine transportation industry with connections worldwide, and Lucille was the driving force behind its success. As the company grew she worked her way from receptionist to secretary to dispatcher to administrator to CEO and finally, to president. A remarkable feat for a woman in those times, and made even more remarkable in that her unlikely success took place in the male-dominated world of towboating.Lucille Johnstone was as legendary for her kindness and social conscience as she was for her clever negotiating and creative deal making. Because of her selflessness, she unfortunately did not think it necessary to secure her position in the corporation she helped to build, ending up on the outside looking in after a generational shift of ownership. Putting that behind her, Lucille went on with life, this time as a driving force behind Expo 86, the new Vancouver International Airport and St. John Ambulance, among a number of other businesses and charities. Lucille's many recognitions include an honorary doctorate from UBC as a Woman of Distinction, and being named to both the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada."

A Year in the Life of Andy Warhol, McCabe, David
94 McCabe, David A Year in the Life of Andy Warhol
London Phaidon Press 2003 0714843229 / 9780714843223 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket
Heavy opaque mylar has short tears head and tail of spine, book shows only slight wear. ; A bright, solid book, Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. Titles in green on dust jacket, images on front and back boards. ; B&W Illustrations; 9 X 6.42 X 1.24 inches; 240 pages; "In late 1964 Andy Warhol commissioned young fashion photographer David McCabe to document his daily activities for one year. During the course of this project, whenever the artist called McCabe would come to meet him at The Factory, an opening, a party, a coffeeshop or any place where Warhol would decide that he wanted to be accompanied by the photographer and his camera. In the end, these images were never published, perhaps because they revealed more than the increasingly-famous Warhol was willing to share with the public. Hidden away for almost 40 years, the significant majority of these 400 duotone photos are now presented together for the first time to fulfill their original intention in an astounding tour de force of dynamic and often poignant realism: A Year in the Life of Andy Warhol. These images not only represent unique documentation of one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century, but also provide a rare behind-the-scenes look at the New York art world at a time when Pop art was at its peak. McCabe's photographs are accompanied by the entertaining descriptions and reminiscences of Factory insider David Dalton, one of Warhol's first assistants."
