Vancouver BC Figure 1 Publishing 2016 1927958563 / 9781927958568 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Only slight wear. ; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. ; B&W Photographs; 9.37 X 6.54 X 1.73 inches; 446 pages; "A midnight's child of poor rural India, Ujjal Dosanjh emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1964 at the age of eighteen, and spent nearly four years making crayons, car parts and shunting trains while he attended night school and learned English by listening to BBC Radio. He moved to Canada in 1968, to the west coast, where he pulled lumber in a sawmill for a few years, eventually earning a B.A from Simon Fraser University in 1973 and then his law degree from the University of British Columbia three years later. He practiced law for many years, and was a social justice advocate who fought for the rights of farm and domestic workers. After many years as a Member of the Legislative Assembly he became Attorney General and then Premier of British Columbia, the first person of Indian descent to hold these offices anywhere in the country. This is a deeply personal and thoughtful memoir of Dosanjh’s journey from his beloved India to the upper echelons of Canadian politics, a story that is both wise and compelling, about a man passionate about social justice and democratic process who continues to rail against injustice and corruption wherever it is happening in the world."

As new, 1 copy is creased on back fly leaf. ; Glossy pictorial card covers ; Trade PB; B&W and Colour illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 95 pages; As a young man in Denmark, Haagensen became enamoured of the ham radio and what it could be used for. As he grew and obtained his education, he discovered the Institute of Technology and a course for Radio Operators in Copenhagen. WWII was approaching and Denmark, being on the border with Germany, everyone was affected. Borge was too young to serve as a soldier but he still found interesting ways to use his knowledge to help the resistance movement, stiing up clandestine broadcast transmitters. After the war was his compulsory military service, a time working as radio technician in the navy and most interesting of all working in remote stations in Iceland and Greenland. Haagensen gradually built his network of international friends and a varried work experience and eventually married and moved to Vancouver on Canada's West Coast. He has continued his love of the North and has had a great deal of experience in Canada's high North. He worked for Trans Canada Airlines but eventually ended up breaking into a new form of communication with the newly formed CHEK television station in Victoria BC and on to other equally interesting occupations. The world was his oyster.

The book is based on a "trail of letters" he wrote to his parents and other family members in England. Real history is the story of people such as Jack Shelford and his brother Arthur who left their homes in England to find a better and peaceful life far away from the clamour and ugliness of war. they had a sense of adventure and refused to let this vast and sometimes cruel land overwhelm them. They endured unbelievable hardships in order to acheive success-first building their homestead and then turning it into a productive farm.
