Fighting Sail On Lake Huron And Georgian Bay, Gough, Barry
15 Gough, Barry Fighting Sail On Lake Huron And Georgian Bay
St. Catharines, ON Vanwell Publishing Ltd 2002 1550681141 / 9781550681147 1st Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Only slight wear.; Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. A bright, solid book ; B&W Illustrations; 9.13 X 6.57 X 1.11 inches; 215 pages; " Barry Gough's new work makes an important and long-awaited contribution to our understanding of the struggle for domination in the Upper Great Lakes and the American heartland during the War of 1812. A critical time for both the old northwest and the peoples who lived along the U.S.-Canadian border, it was also a time when the territories that became Wisconsin and Minnesota were formed, the fur trade was established, and the Indian nations attempted to preserve both their homeland and their independence. It is a unique study in that it goes far beyond the Battle of Lake Erie, where traditional historical accounts end, adding new chapters to the history of Detroit and Michilimackinac. This comprehensive, chronological account exposes the reader not only to the naval and territorial consequences of the era but also to the plight along the way. It is the story of shipbuilding, of the limits of sea power, and of the men and women who succeeded in traversing unknown water and land. The author details such events as Commodore Arthur Sinclair's disastrous U.S. naval expedition to Lake Huron and Georgian Bay in 1814 and describes how British forces captured unsuspecting U.S. naval schooners. Supplemented with excellent maps and illustrations, the text also provides information about hydrographic surveying and the search for useful naval bases."

A bright, solid book.; Naval Policy and History; 9.06 X 6.14 X 0.71 inches; 299 pages; "explores innovation within the Royal Navy from the financial constraints of the 1930s to World War Two, the Cold War and the refocusing of the Royal Navy after 1990.Successful adaptation to new conditions has been critical to all navies at all times. To naval historians the significance and process of change is not new, but in recent years innovation has been increasingly studied within a number of other disciplines, providing new theoretical positions and insights. This study examines key case studies of change, some successful others less so, which place the experience of the Royal Navy within a variety of economic and strategic contexts. Together these studies provide excellent new insights against which to set recent ideas on innovation and provide a stimulus to more research by historians and scholars in other disciplines."

20 Hicks, Brian & Schuyler Kropf Raising the Hunley The Remarkable History and Recovery of the Lost Confederate Submarine
New York Ballantine Books 2002 0345447719 / 9780345447715 First Edition; Fifth Printing Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket Illustrated by Map Endpapers
Light edge wear, short closed tear to dust jacket, some scuffing. ; A bright, solid book DJ in protective Mylar sleeve, unclipped. ; 1.1 x 9.7 x 6.2 Inches; 320 pages; "The history of the Confederate submarine 'H. L. Hunley' is as astonishing as its disappearance. On February 17, 1864, after a legendary encounter with a Union battleship, the iron “fish boat” vanished without a trace somewhere off the coast of South Carolina. For more than a century the fate of the 'Hunley' remained one of the great unsolved mysteries of the Civil War. Then, on August 8, 2000, with thousands of spectators crowding Charleston Harbor, the 'Hunley' was raised from the bottom of the sea and towed ashore. Now, award-winning journalists Brian Hicks and Schuyler Kropf offer new insights into the Hunley’s final hours and recount the amazing true story of its rescue. The brainchild of wealthy New Orleans planter and lawyer Horace Lawson Hunley, the 'Hunley' inspired tremendous hopes of breaking the Union’s naval blockade of Charleston, only to drown two crews on disastrous test runs. But on the night of February 17, 1864, the 'Hunley' finally made good on its promise. Under the command of the heroic Lieutenant George E. Dixon, the sub rammed a spar torpedo into the Union sloop 'Housatonic' and sank the ship within minutes, accomplishing a feat of stealth technology that would not be repeated for half a century. And then, shortly after its stunning success, the 'Hunley' vanished. This book is an extraordinary true story peopled with a fascinating cast of characters, including Horace Hunley himself, the Union officers and crew who went down with the 'Housatonic', P. T. Barnum, who offered $100,000 for its recovery, and novelist Clive Cussler, who spearheaded the mission that finally succeeded in finding the 'Hunley'. The drama of salvaging the sub is only the prelude to a page-turning account of how scientists unsealed this archaeological treasure chest and discovered the inner-workings of a submarine more technologically advanced than anyone expected, as well as numerous, priceless artifacts. Hicks and Kropf have crafted a spellbinding adventure story that spans over a century of American history. Dramatically told, filled with historical details and contemporary color, illustrated with breathtaking original photographs, 'Raising the Hunley' is one of the most fascinating Civil War books to appear in years."
