A few ink notations in text, head and tail of spine a little bumped, light corner curl of card covers. A few pages loose but still present ; A bright, solid book ; Trade PB; B&W Illustrations; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; During WWII, Dr. F.A.L. Mathewson was responsible for examination of male aircrew recruits for the Royal Canadian Air Force. His evaluation of the fitness of these recruits for pilot training included medical histories, physical examinations, measurements of height, weight, and blood pressure. As well, and unique at the time was an ECG (electrocardiogram), even though its value was uncertain and it was not used as a requirement for recruitment. At the end of the war several thousand medical records including the ECG's were sent to Ottawa." With the permission of the RCAF, a research study was set up and between 1946-1948 3983 of the WWII recruits were chosen to participate in a long term study. They were divided into 5 groups and one group was examined each year. "The current status of the study can be summarized as of July 1999. 1908 members were still alive." Appendix I is a list of 39 peer reviewed publications from the study published from 1952-1998. The bulk of the book is comprised of the names of the members of the study with their names addresses and phone numbers (if still living).

After the conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 during the First Crusade, the organisation became a religious and military order under its own Papal charter, charged with the care and defence of the Holy Land. Following the conquest of the Holy Land by Islamic forces, the knights operated from Rhodes, over which they were sovereign, and later from Malta, where they administered a vassal state under the Spanish viceroy of Sicily." (Wikipedia) Despite their stated goals they were the subject of much controversy during the Crusades and medieval era.

The Life and Destruction of Saint Mary's Hospital, McEvoy, Jaimie
5 McEvoy, Jaimie The Life and Destruction of Saint Mary's Hospital
New Westminster, BC St. Mary's Health Foundation 2008 0981136508 / 9780981136509 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Only slight wear, as new. ; A bright, solid book, dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. Generously illustrated throughout. ; B&W Illustrations; 9.10 X 6.20 X 1.10 inches; 272 pages; "The Life and Destruction of Saint Mary's Hospital is the story of Saint Mary's Hospital in New Westminster, British Columbia, from its founding in 1887 by the Sisters of Providence, with forty-two beds and a staff of five, through its modernization and growth into one of the finest surgical centres in the province. From its opening day, Saint Mary's Hospital brought profound changes to health care in the province. Unlike other hospitals at the time, which did not accept children or persons with incurable conditions, Saint Mary's welcomed both. The Sisters did not discriminate by race and served the old, the rich, the poor and the mentally ill alike. Even those who did not need medical care but were simply hungry were fed.Author Jaimie McEvoy skillfully places the remarkable history of Saint Mary's within the context of the history of British Columbia and New Westminster--encompassing a period including the creation of the province; the Gold Rush; two world wars; smallpox, cholera and influenza epidemics; the Great Fire of New Westminster; numerous health-care reforms and the ultimate controversy that closed Saint Mary's doors forever in 2004, after 117 years of faithful and compassionate service."
