THE FRASER, Hutchison, Bruce & Richard Bennett Ilustrator
1 Hutchison, Bruce & Richard Bennett Ilustrator THE FRASER
Toronto, ON Clarke Irwin 1950 First Canadian Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket
Dust jacket lightly chipped, closed tear top of spine, couple of short tears bottom edge, light discoloration. ; A tight solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; Rivers of America Series #42; B&W Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 368 pages; The Fraser is the major on Canada's West Coast. It provided a thoroughfare for the early explorers as it wended its way through the multiple mountain ranges that form the backbone of British Columbia. In modern times it is one of the largest sources for electrical power in North America. "Shaped like a giant fishhook stuck into the Pacific Ocean, the mighty Fraser is one of the most important rivers of North America, politically, economically, and historically. Compelling the reader's interest with the power and vigour of his narrative, Bruce Hutchison explores the Fraser's romantic history as one of Canada's two main channels of civilization. The Fraser's story is that of British Columbia and its people, and Mr. Hutchison shows that it provides some of the richest yet least known chapters in Canadian history. These he unrolls in an unforgettable panorama, from the days of Spanish discovery to the story of the city of Vancouver, the river's most remarkable product. In its gold, its steamboating, its fur; as a fisherman's paradise, and as the largest untapped source of electrical power in North America-the story of the Fraser is one of colour and high drama. It is exciting reading." (blurb)

Book corners a little bumped, top corner of front free end paper clipped . ; Signed by author on the front free endpaper. A tight solid book. Dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. A B&W map of the Capilano watershed area at front of book. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 184 pages; Just inland from the Howe Sound the Capilano River flows through a spectacular mountain setting in behind the distinctive twin peaks that form 'The Lions', and feeds into Capilano Lake through the Cleveland Dam and into the Fraser River. The lake is extremely important as it serves as the water supply for not only North and West Vancouver on the North Shore but also for the large metropolitan area of Vancouver on the other side of the Fraser River as well. A fascinating history, it attributes the name of the river as deriving from the name of the local Squamish chief who lived from appoximately 1792 and more than likely witnessed the arrivals of both Captain James Cook and Captain George Vancouver.
