7 Heighton, Steven THE SHADOW BOXER
Toronto, ON Alfred A. Knopf 2000 0676971938 / 9780676971934 First Canadian Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
Only slight wear. Dust jacket in Mylar. A tight bright book.; 384 pages; Heighton chronicles the arduous artistic journey of the precocious but troubled Sevigne Torrins, who starts off by ditching a promising pugilistic career to follow his literary muse. The early chapters focus on his difficult relationship with his father, a former sailor drinking himself to death on the shores of Lake Superior, followed by a road-travel sequence that takes him to Egypt, where his mother has lived for years with her second husband. Most of the book, however, revolves around two romantic relationships, the first with a sexy, rabidly ambitious fellow writer, Una Sutherland, and the second and more lasting with a woman nearly 10 years older than Sevigne, 34-year-old singer Mikaela Chandler, whose biological clock is ticking with a vengeance. Heighton writes evocatively about the undercurrents of lust, creativity and ennui that shape the two situations. But he saves his most powerful work for the finale, when Sevigne isolates himself at his family's cottage on a remote island near Toronto, where a series of catastrophes reduce his winter writing retreat to a hovel and he contracts an infection that forces him to perform a grisly self-amputation.

And ...Howe! An Authorized Autobiography, Howe, Gordie & Colleen Howe & Tom Delisle
8 Howe, Gordie & Colleen Howe & Tom Delisle And ...Howe! An Authorized Autobiography
Traverse City MI Power Play Pubns Inc 1995 0964714906 / 9780964714908 First Edition; Second Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
Signed by All Authors; Light creasing top edge of DJ ; Signed by both Gordie and Colleen Howe. A bright, solid book dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; B&W Photographs; 9.21 X 5.98 X 1.89 inches; 428 pages; " Ask Bobby Orr who was the best ever, and he’ll tell you it was Gordie Howe. Ask Wayne Gretzky, and he’ll say the same thing. Big, skilled, mean, and nearly indestructible, Howe dominated the game and the record books for decades. Today he is still known as “Mr. Hockey,” and any bruising forward who can be relied upon to take his team on his shoulders hopes to be compared to the guy who wore number 9 for Detroit for so many years. But the fact is, there will never be another like Mr. Hockey. Certainly, no one has come close to matching his incredible 20 consecutive seasons among the top five scorers in the NHL. No one has come close to scoring 100 points after the age of 40. It seems impossible that anyone will ever again play for Team Canada against the Russians—and share the ice with his two sons. What seems even less likely is that another player will ever again suit up as a professional hockey player in six different decades.Still, Howe did not inspire generations of hockey players only by re-writing the record books, or by getting his name engraved on the league’s more coveted trophies. When fans and players alike talk about Gordie Howe, it’s not so much the player they revere, as the man. Despite his unyielding ferocity on the ice, Howe’s name has long been a byword for decency, generosity, and honesty off it. Even those who were too young to see him play know him as a man of his word, and a family man.Going back to Howe’s Depression-era roots, and following him through his Hall of Fame career, his enduring marriage to Colleen, his extraordinary relationship with his children, and into the present, Mr. Hockey is the definitive account of the game’s most incredible legacy.
