A number of these communities have since become ghost towns and these stories remain only as oral history. Benton, who had become known as a storyteller has recreated the stories about the very real people and places that populated her childhood.

The author spent most of her life living in Sechelt and throughout her life collected information on the area, both through listening to oral histories from local residents and First Nations, and gathering of records and data from government and other sources. She died before she could publish her intended history, but this book was finished by her brother and sister 7 years after her death.

Since then many factors affected the infux of peoples, the establishment of Fort Simpson and trading posts in the neighbouring communities, the construction of the Collins Overland Telegraph and the Omineca gold rush. Riverboats on the Skeena River and the Grand Trunk Railway were instrumental in bringing people to the site between Prince Rupert and Hazelton which became Terrace.

Card covers show very light shelf wear.; A bright, solid book.; B&W Illustrations; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 122 pages; Vedder Crossing, part of Sardis (now part of Chilliwack), is on the south side of Hwy 1, just 20 minutes from the crossroads at Hope. It once housed a large Canadian armed forces base, now greatly reduced. Various divisions of the Sto-lo nation have land holdings around the community and enrich the cultural diversity. It was settled in the early 1890's and developed as a farming community. In 1942, the army base Camp Chilliwack was built to help train the troops destined for service in WWII. Sadly the base closed down in 1997 but the community thrived. The book is richly illustrated with B&W photos and maps.
