There has never been any doubt that Rossland lies in an extinct volcanic area but in recent years there has been a change in perception. The first Canada Geological Survey on Rossland in 1915 postulated that, about 200 million yerars ago, a continental volcano existed where Red Mountain is today. Recent studies have shown that the Rossland Volcano was one of several island volcanoes that formed a Volcanic Island Arc situated in the sea above the continenal shelf on the western edge of Ancestral North America in the same context that the islands of Japan have with the Asian coast."
