Kenmore, WA Epicenter Press 2002 0970849397 / 9780970849397 First Edition Softcover Near Fine
Only slight wear to card covers ; A bright, solid book.; Alaska Book Adventures ; 8.96 X 6.08 X 0.54 inches; 192 pages; "The Klondike Stampede caused a transportation boom in the north, where in its thrilling heyday about 250 wooden steamboats operated in the Yukon River drainage of Alaska and the Yukon. The sternwheelers became gold rush icons. But the hardy, pragmatic entrepreneurs who ran the boats were lured by profits, not romance. In 1901, a passenger's fare from St. Michael to Dawson (about 1,800 miles) was $125, and cargo was moved upriver at $100 a ton. Yet it was a tough, risky business. The season was short, good crews were hard to find, and a navigation error could sink or strand an investment worth tens of thousands of dollars--huge sums at the turn of the century. Mechanical problems were occupational hazards. The steamboats consumed enormous amounts of firewood for their boilers. And if a riverboat didn't find a safe berth or drydock before freezeup, it risked being crushed by ice the following spring. Charles W. Adams was an able, smart business college graduate who bought a share of the Lavelle Young in his mid-20s. He became one of the North's great riverboat captains, lived enough adventure in the north to fill several lifetimes, and played a crucial role in the founding of Fairbanks, Alaska. "

High Noon in the Cold War Kennedy, Khrushchev, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, Frankel, Max
10 Frankel, Max High Noon in the Cold War Kennedy, Khrushchev, and the Cuban Missile Crisis
New York Presidio Press 2004 0345465059 / 9780345465054 1st; First Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
Only slight wear; DJ is bright and crisp, enclosed in mylar covering, unclipped. ; B&W Illustrations; 9.40 X 6.30 X 1 inches; 206 pages; "Using his personal memories of covering the conflict, and gathering evidence from recent records and new scholarship and testimony, Max Frankel corrects widely held misconceptions about the game of “nuclear chicken” played by John Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev in October 1962, when Soviet missiles were secretly planted in Cuba and aimed at the United States.High Noon in the Cold War portrays an embattled young American president, not jaunty and callow as widely believed, but increasingly calm and statesmanlike and a Russian ruler who was not only a “wily old peasant” but an insecure belligerent desperate to achieve credibility. Here, too, are forgotten heroes like John McCone, the conservative Republican CIA head whose intuition made him a crucial figure in White House debates. In detailing the disastrous miscalculations of the two superpowers (the U.S. thought the Soviets would never deploy missiles to Cuba; the Soviets thought the U.S. would have to acquiesce) and how Kennedy and Khrushchev beat back hotheads in their own councils, this fascinating book re-creates the whole story of the scariest encounter of the Cold War, as told by a master reporter."

DANGEROUS NATION AMERICA IN THE WORLD 1600-1900, KAGAN, ROBERT
17 KAGAN, ROBERT DANGEROUS NATION AMERICA IN THE WORLD 1600-1900
London ATLANTIC BOOKS 2006 1843545306 / 9781843545309 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket

In the process Kagan reveals an America that is as ambitious as it is expansionist." Most Americans believe the United States had been an isolationist power until the twentieth century. This is wrong. In a riveting and brilliantly revisionist work of history, Robert Kagan, bestselling author of Of Paradise and Power, shows how Americans have in fact steadily been increasing their global power and influence from the beginning. Driven by commercial, territorial, and idealistic ambitions, the United States has always perceived itself, and been seen by other nations, as an international force. This is a book of great importance to our understanding of our nation’s history and its role in the global community.
