Red bait! Struggles of a Mine Mill Local, King, Al
5 King, Al Red bait! Struggles of a Mine Mill Local
Vancouver BC Kingbird Publishing 1998 0968376800 / 9780968376805 First Edition Paperback Fine Signed by Author
Signed by Author; Only slight wear to card covers. ; Inscribed by author on title page. As new, bright, solid book. ; Trade PB; B&W Illustrations; 176 pages; Inscribed by the author on Title Page "To Dorothy Best Wishes Al King". "In 1937, Albert King got a job as labourer at Consolidated Mining's smelter (now Cominco) in Trail, B.C. Shortly after, he helped organize Local 480 of Mine Mill. In 1950, when the United Steelworkers of America launched a raid, King found himself the very green president of a 'red' local of a union that, all over North America, was struggling for its life. The International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, or Mine Mill, was, depending on your point of view, a Communist hotbed or one of the most progressive unions in North American history. As an organizer, president of his local and then western Board member of Mine Mill, Al King here tells a story that has never been told: of how his union organized in western Canada under the harsh working conditions of the 1930s; of the deep divisions in Canada's labour movement in the union raids of the 1950s and '60s; of his strong involvement in occupational health and safety issues; and of how a small group of people organized and fought for a union under threat."
