In 1965, he and 2 outback colleagues, Stephen Stewart and Terry Hill, sailed to Canada to teach for two years. There, as their mothers lamented, they forgot to come back. Pettit accepted a teaching assignment in Nanaimo and stayed, eventually serving as an elementary school principal since 1976.
