The book was developed from a series of colorful interviews with Goode as well as notes that Goode brought to her. It forms a familiar story of a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, becoming involved with the criminal element, the glamour of the Gay Nineties as well as rampant police corruption. He was not a notable amongst the denizens of the criminal underworld but a likable journeyman who wanted to illuminate the path that shouldn't be taken. He died shortly before publication of this book in 1934.
