Usual library markings in book, pocket on FFEP, tape stains on boards ; A tight solid book. DJ in Mylar ; Ex-Library; B&W Photographs; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 214 pages; This is an early book by the renowned classical historian and archaeologist Mikhail Rostovtsev (Rostovtzeff). He was an early proponent of the Russian Revolution but quickly became disenchanted by the actions of the Bolsheviks and fled to England and the US where he eventually taught the ancient history of Greece and Rome. He was quite knowledgeable about the area around the Baltic Sea and his name for the Baltic States and the Kaliningrad region was 'the land of amber and shale'. It appears that the later years covered in this book were filled in by editors.
